App State Brew 3/13: Mak Attack

McClain's Big Day Lifts Mountaineers To Sixth Straight Win

Good morning, App State Fam. We couldn’t put it any better….

What all do we have stirring in today’s Brew? Check it out below.

🥎 Mak Attack
🏀 Leading The Way
🤼 The Stage Is Set
🟡 And much more

🔼 Mak Attack. Less than half way into the 2026 season, we’ve already run out of adjectives to describe App State Softball’s Makayla McClain.

A monster performance from the Liberty, N.C., native lifted the Mountaineers to a dominant 10-0 win, their sixth straight victory, all via the run rule.

Along with hitting her 11th and 12th home runs of the season in her first two at-bats, McClain posted a perfect day at the plate and drove in five of App State's 10 runs.

Sophie Moshos provided one of her best outings of the season in the circle, pitching a complete-game shutout while allowing just three baserunners. She faced three over the minimum in the game and threw just 57 pitches in her effort.

🔼 Leading The Way. For the past two years, Alonzo Dodd has led the way for the App State men’s basketball program, both on and off the court.

Those leadership qualities were recognized this week as Dodd was named one of the 25 finalists for The Nolan Richardson Award.

The award is presented annually to a division I player who is the heart and soul of his team and a leader on and off the court.

🔼 Country’s Finest. A month into his App State Baseball career, Gage Peterson is already garnering attention.

In four appearances this season for the Mountaineers, Peterson is 3-0 with a minuscule ERA of 1.64. In 22 innings of work, Peterson has allowed just 17 hits, while striking out 32 opposing hitters.

🔼 The Stage Is Set. That tickets were punched and now the stage is set for a trio of App State wrestlers.

Tomas Brooker (184) earned App State’s highest seed at #21, while Stephan Monchery (HWT) is at #23 in the bracket. The final Mountaineer on national stage is Aldo Hernandez (141), who will be in a pigtail match at the #33 seed.

With her two HRs in Wednesday’s victory over Charleston Southern, Makayla McClain became the seventh player in program history to hit 25+ career HRs.

Who was the last Mountaineer to accomplish that feat?

Got a guess?
