Mountaineers Set To Face Texas State In Opening Round of Sun Belt Tournament This Morning

Good morning, Mountaineers. While we’re eating our bagel and sipping our coffee this morning, there’s only one thing on the mind of the App State Baseball squad…

Let’s go trophy hunting!

What all do we have stirring in today’s Brew? Check it out below.

🟡 And much more

🔼 Trophy Hunting. The hunt begins this morning for the App State Baseball team as they open up play at the 2026 Sun Belt Tournament in Montgomery, Ala.

Coming off their third 30+ win season in the past four years, along with the most Sun Belt victories in program history (17), the Mountaineers sit as the third-seed in the double-elimination format.

This morning, App State hits the field to face sixth-seeded Texas State at 10 a.m. EST on ESPN+.

🔼 Four Of A Kind. Before even stepping onto the field in Montgomery, the Mountaineers already piled up hardware to bring home.

On Monday, App State Baseball junior right-handed pitcher Gage Peterson was named the Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year, while he, along with Steven Smith, Charlie Evans and Colton Denton, earned all-conference honors.

Peterson and Smith each garnered first-team honors, while Evans earned a second-team nod. Denton was named to the inaugural all-freshman team. It also marks the fourth time in the last five years that the Mountaineers have produced either the league's Freshman of the Year or Newcomer of the Year recipient.

🔼 Taking The Stairs. Coach Kerns and the App State men’s basketball program added another piece to the puzzle for the 2026-27 campaign.

This week, Jaylen Colon, a 6-2 shooting guard, signed on to join the Mountaineers next year.

Colon comes to App State after an outstanding season at South Plains College in Texas. Last season, he helped the Texans to the 2026 NJCAA Tournament, shooting 40-percent from long range and has knocked down 80 career 3-pointers.

He arrives with two years of eligibility remaining.

With four Mountaineers earning All-SBC accolades this year, where does that rank for most honorees in a single season for App State?

Got a guess?
