App State Brew 6/26: Mountaineers At Work
Preparation For Fall Seasons Well Underway

Good morning, App State Fam. Mountaineers are grinding their way through the summer!
What all do we have stirring in today’s Brew? Check it out below.
🤼 Three Of A Kind
📚 Raising The Bar
🏑 Setting The Slate
🟡 And much more

Throughout the summer, we will be counting down the days
to the return of App State Football this fall. The Mountaineers will
host Maine on September 5 at 3:30 p.m.
71 Days Away. The year was 197️⃣1️⃣. The player was Clayton Deskins.
Deskins, who was inducted into the App State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004, took a handoff on Oct. 23, 197️⃣1️⃣ and scampered 98 yards to pay dirt for what still stands as the longest run in program history.
The Arlington, Va., native was the team’s leading receiver in 1969 and 1970, as well as the team’s leading rusher in 197️⃣1️⃣.

🔼 Three Of A Kind. App State Wrestling standouts Kaden Keiser, Anthony Conetta and Tomas Brooker have earned Academic All-SoCon recognition for the 2025-26 season.
The classroom success of the title-sweeping Mountaineers contributed to a team GPA of 3.46 for the spring semester — a number that led men's programs at App State — and a cumulative team GPA of 3.25.
To be eligible for Academic All-SoCon recognition, student-athletes had to carry at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA at the conclusion of the spring semester and meet participation thresholds during the 2025-26 season. Additionally, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least three semesters at their institutions, making true freshmen and first-year transfers ineligible for inclusion.
🔼 Raising The Bar. This week, the App State Track & Field trio of Lilly Nichols, Ava Studney and Thomas Wlazlowski earned Academic All-District honors from the Collegiate Sports Communicators (CSC) organization.
Nichols, Studney and Wlazlowski were three of App State's record-breaking contingent of athletes who participated in last month's NCAA East First Round. Nichols just missed a second straight pole vault berth to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, while Wlazlowski was the top Mountaineer finisher among three men in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
All-District teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. To qualify, a student-athlete must be a key contributor who earns at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and is at least a sophomore both academically and athletically, while holding a top 50 regional ranking in a single event.
🔼 Setting The Slate. After a historic 2025 season that featured the program's first national ranking at No. 17, the App State field hockey program announced its 2026 schedule.
The schedule features nine games with free admission for fans at the Dr. Jan C. Watson Field at the Brandon and Erica M. Adcock Field Hockey Complex, including visits from two ACC opponents in Wake Forest and North Carolina.

In addition to his rushing and receiving success, Clayton Deskins is still one of the best kick returners in program history, piling up 1,869 career yards with the Mountaineers.
Where does that rank in the App State record books?
